Musatay Akynzhanov

Musatay Akynzhanov was an outstanding Kazakh scholar, Doctor of Historical Sciences, playwright, literary critic, and public figure who made a significant contribution to the development of national historical science and literary studies. He was born in 1905 in the village of Karaul in the Abai district of the Abai region.

He received his primary education at a rural school. In 1925, he graduated from the Pedagogical Technical School in Semey, and in 1929 he completed his studies at the Pedagogical Institute of Public Education in Orenburg. From an early age, he showed a strong interest in science and education and began working in the fields of education and journalism.

Between 1925 and 1941, he held responsible positions at the district and regional newspaper “Enbekshi Kazakh”, and worked as a special correspondent for the republican press. He also served as secretary of regional, district, and territorial committees of the Komsomol, and as secretary of a district committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan. Later, he headed the Kazakh branch of the Marx–Engels–Lenin Institute (IMEL) under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, where he made an important contribution to translating Marxist–Leninist works into the Kazakh language. This work further deepened his academic research.

During the Second World War, he participated in military operations. After the war, he was actively engaged in scientific and pedagogical work and for many years taught at the S. M. Kirov Kazakh State University. Under his leadership, many young scholars were trained, and he established a scientific school in the fields of history and literature.

Musatay Akynzhanov is the author of more than one hundred scientific works. His fundamental studies “The Origin of the Kazakh People,” “The Origin and Formation of the Kazakh People,” and “The Life and Works of Abai” are devoted to the ethnogenesis and spiritual development of the Kazakh people. A special place in his scholarly legacy is occupied by his research on the works of the great poet Abai Kunanbayev, which played an important role in the development of Kazakh literary studies.

He began his literary career early: his first short story “Sharua Dostary” (“Friends of the Peasant”) was published in 1925. In 1930, a collection of his stories and essays was published. He also wrote and published monographs and brochures on historical and literary topics.

Akynzhanov’s dramatic works were devoted to national history and the heroic traditions of the people. Among them are the plays “Isatai and Makhambet,” “Srym Datov,” “Bagytai–Bagila,” “Frunze,” “Zhenis Kamy” (“For the Sake of Victory”), “Shopan Kyz” (“The Shepherd Girl”), “Altyn Saka” (“The Golden Knucklebone”), “Secrets of the Golden Fields,” and “Ybyrai Altynsarin.” In his works, he created artistic portrayals of historical figures, reflected the people’s struggle for freedom, and glorified the working person, as well as the ideals of humanism and patriotism.

For his merits, he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd Class, the medal “For the Victory over Germany,” and Certificates of Honor from the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR.

Musatay Akynzhanov was a remarkable personality who made an invaluable contribution to the development of Kazakh science and literature. His scientific works and literary creations remain important for the study of national history and spiritual values.
