Jusupbek Aymauytov

(1889-1930)

Born in 1889 in the Bayan-Aul district of Pavlodar region.

From 1911 to 1914, he worked as a village teacher, and in 1914 he entered the Semipalatinsk Teacher's Seminary, which he completed in 1919. Here he met Kanysh Satpayev and Mukhtar Auezov. Together with Auezov, he founded the "Zhanar" Kazakh youth organization in 1917. Starting in 1918, with Auezov's help, he became the editor of the "Abai" magazine, which began publication in Semipalatinsk. Later, the classic of Kazakh literature Mukhtar Auezov referred to Aymauytov as his teacher.

From 1919 to 1922, he was a member of the board of the People's Commissariat of Education and Science of the Republic, the head of the Semipalatinsk regional education department, and the editor of the "Kazakh Language" newspaper. From 1922 to 1924, he worked as a teacher in Karkaraly, from 1924 to 1926 he was a literary worker for the "Ak Zhol" (Tashkent) newspaper, and from 1926 to 1929 he served as the director of the Shymkent Pedagogical Technical School. In 1929, he moved to the city of Kyzylorda to work for the "Enbekshi Kazakh" newspaper.

His articles were not liked by the authorities, and soon he was arrested on false charges of embezzling charity funds allocated for those who suffered from famine in Torgay, Kostanay, and Aktobe cities. He was acquitted. However, shortly after, Aymauytov was again arrested on charges of counter-revolutionary activities and was taken to Moscow. He was tried by the OGPU board and executed on April 21, 1930, at the age of 41. He was buried in the brother's cemetery at Vagankovo Cemetery alongside others who suffered repression. On November 4, 1988, the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan fully rehabilitated the writer due to the absence of a crime in his actions.
